When a French SME decides to structure its operations with an ERP, two names come up time and again: SAP Business One and Odoo Enterprise. The former carries the prestige of the world leader in ERP. The latter embodies the open-source agility born in Belgium. But beyond reputations, which one truly fits your business?
A clarification: we are talking about SAP Business One (B1), the solution designed for SMEs with 5 to 500 employees, not SAP S/4HANA which targets mid-size and large enterprises. On the Odoo side, we focus on Odoo Enterprise, the commercial version with support and managed hosting, not the Community Edition with its limited feature set.
This article is part of our ERP comparison 2026 and gives you all the keys to make your decision.
Positioning: two opposing philosophies
SAP Business One: industrial rigor
SAP Business One has been around since 2002. It is a monolithic ERP, designed to provide a structured framework from day one. Its strength: a predefined functional scope, proven processes and native integration with the SAP ecosystem (Business Technology Platform, Crystal Reports, SAP Analytics Cloud).
For an industrial SME or a subsidiary of a group already running SAP, B1 offers natural continuity. The downside: rigidity. Modifying a standard workflow often requires the involvement of a certified integrator.
Odoo Enterprise: à la carte modularity
Odoo takes the opposite approach. Born in 2005 under the name OpenERP, the Belgian software offers a lightweight core that is enriched module by module: accounting, CRM, inventory, manufacturing, e-commerce, HR, and more. Each module can be activated independently.
This modularity appeals to SMEs that want to start small and scale up gradually. But it also implies more configuration work to achieve a coherent system.
Price comparison: the crux of the matter
Budget is often the first decision criterion. And on this front, the gap is significant.
SAP Business One
- SaaS license: EUR 80 to 150 per user per month depending on profile (full user, limited, or BI)
- Implementation cost: count EUR 30,000 to 80,000 for an SME with 10 to 30 users, integration and configuration included
- Annual maintenance: approximately 18 to 22% of license cost if you opt for the on-premise model
- Hidden costs: custom developments via the SDK (Software Development Kit) are billed at time-and-materials rates by SAP partners
Odoo Enterprise
- SaaS license (Odoo Online): EUR 24.90 per user per month for the Standard plan, EUR 37.40 for the Custom plan (with Odoo Studio)
- Odoo.sh license (managed hosting with code access): approximately EUR 46 per user per month
- Implementation cost: EUR 10,000 to 40,000 for an equivalent scope
- Hidden costs: custom module development, migration between major versions (Odoo publishes a new version every year)
In summary: for 20 users over 3 years, the total cost of ownership (TCO) of SAP B1 ranges between EUR 80,000 and 150,000. Odoo Enterprise sits more in the EUR 30,000 to 70,000 range. The gap narrows when heavy custom development is added on the Odoo side, but it rarely closes completely.

Features: the head-to-head comparison
French accounting
Both solutions handle the French General Chart of Accounts (PCG) and produce entries that comply with tax standards. However:
- SAP B1 has a mature French localization, maintained by SAP and its historical partners. The FEC (Fichier des Écritures Comptables) is generated natively.
- Odoo also offers a complete French localization with FEC, VAT, DEB/DES and bank reconciliation. The OCA (Odoo Community Association) regularly enriches the French accounting modules.
Verdict: a tie. Both are compliant, but SAP B1 provides greater reassurance to traditional accountants.
Electronic invoicing 2026
The electronic invoicing obligation is being phased in progressively in France starting 2026. This is a critical topic.
- SAP B1 relies on PDP partners (Plateforme de Dématérialisation Partenaire) such as Sovos, Basware or Comarch for Factur-X compliance and connection to the PPF.
- Odoo has natively integrated the Factur-X format in its version 17 and is working on direct connection to the Portail Public de Facturation. Several French integrators already offer PDP connectors.
Verdict: slight advantage to Odoo for native Factur-X integration. SAP B1 remains solid but goes through third-party solutions.
EDI and inter-company exchanges
- SAP B1 benefits from SAP’s longstanding EDI expertise. B2B connectors (EDIFACT, X12) are mature.
- Odoo handles basic EDI but often requires add-on modules or custom development for complex EDI flows (large-scale retail, automotive).
Verdict: advantage SAP B1 for demanding EDI environments.
CRM and sales management
- SAP B1 includes a basic CRM: opportunity management, pipeline, activities. Functional but austere.
- Odoo offers a significantly richer and more modern CRM: lead scoring, marketing automations, email integration, VoIP, and above all an intuitive user interface.
Verdict: clear advantage to Odoo. If CRM is central to your business, Odoo wins hands down.
Production and warehouse management (WMS)
- SAP B1 offers a solid MRP (material requirements planning) module, suited to discrete and repetitive manufacturing. The WMS is basic out of the box but extensible via partner add-ons.
- Odoo provides MRP, PLM (product lifecycle management), quality control and a WMS with integrated barcode scanning. The package is coherent but less proven in complex industrial environments.
Verdict: advantage SAP B1 for heavy industry. Odoo is sufficient for light manufacturing and standard logistics.

Integrator ecosystem in France
SAP Business One
SAP has approximately 50 certified B1 partners in France. The best known: Applium, Nagaro, itelligence (NTT Data), Seidor. These integrators are typically structured consulting firms with SAP-certified consultants. The average daily rate for a SAP B1 consultant ranges between EUR 800 and 1,200.
The advantage: methodical support with proven project methodologies (SAP Activate). The disadvantage: sometimes limited availability for small SMEs, as large accounts take priority.
Odoo
Odoo claims more than 120 partners in France (Silver, Gold and Ready). Key references include: Smile, Camptocamp, Akretion, Niboo, Eezee-IT. Daily rates range from EUR 600 to 1,000, with a greater diversity of profiles: from specialized freelancers to generalist IT services companies.
The advantage: a competitive market that drives prices down and an active community. The disadvantage: integrator quality is more variable. A poor partner choice can turn an Odoo project into a nightmare.
Customization and scalability
SAP Business One
Customization goes through the SAP B1 SDK (DI API, UI API) or through certified add-ons available on the SAP Store. It is robust but technical. Every custom development must be tested during version upgrades. The maintenance cost of custom code is high.
Odoo Enterprise
Odoo offers Odoo Studio, a no-code/low-code tool that allows you to modify views, add fields and create automations without writing a single line of Python. For more advanced needs, developing custom modules in Python remains accessible thanks to rich documentation and a dynamic open-source community.
Verdict: advantage Odoo for accessible customization. SAP B1 remains more controlled, which can be an advantage in terms of stability.
Learning curve and user adoption
This is a point often underestimated, yet it determines project success.
SAP Business One suffers from a dated, dense interface with numerous nested screens. Non-technical users take an average of 2 to 4 weeks to become autonomous. Initial training is a non-negligible cost item.
Odoo has made user experience a differentiator. The interface is clean, responsive, with intuitive navigation. Onboarding is faster: count 1 to 2 weeks for most profiles. Users accustomed to modern SaaS applications feel at home naturally.
When to choose SAP Business One?
SAP B1 is the right choice if your SME matches one of these profiles:
- Industrial SME (manufacturing, subcontracting) with complex production flows and strong EDI requirements
- Subsidiary of a SAP group: interoperability with SAP S/4HANA or SAP BTP justifies the premium
- Regulated sector (pharma, food & beverage, aerospace) where traceability and compliance demand a structuring ERP
- Fast-growing SME anticipating a move to SAP S/4HANA within 3 to 5 years
- Need for consolidated financial reporting across international subsidiaries already running SAP
When to choose Odoo Enterprise?
Odoo Enterprise is the best choice in these situations:
- Startup or service-based SME that needs a performant CRM coupled with invoicing and accounting
- Commerce and trading: the integrated e-commerce module and multi-warehouse inventory management are major assets
- Tight budget: the lower TCO allows investment in customization rather than licenses
- Agile company that wants to modify its processes quickly without systematically depending on an integrator
- SME starting its ERP journey: modularity allows starting with 3-4 modules and expanding progressively
Our verdict for French SMEs
There is no absolute winner. The choice depends on your context:
Choose SAP B1 if you are in industry, if you belong to a SAP ecosystem, or if process rigor takes priority over flexibility. Plan a substantial budget and a solid integrator.
Choose Odoo if you prioritize the features-to-price ratio, if your business is service- or commerce-oriented, and if you want to keep control over the evolution of your system. Invest in choosing your integrator: it is the variable that makes or breaks an Odoo project.
In both cases, do not underestimate the implementation phase. A poorly deployed ERP, whether it costs EUR 30,000 or 150,000, is worthless. See our comprehensive guide on ERP implementation budgets to frame your project, and find other market solutions in our ERP comparison 2026.
