KLARA, the all-in-one business management software for Swiss SMEs operated by ePost Service AG (a subsidiary of Swiss Post), launched its first public REST API on 27 August 2026. The announcement appeared in the “Produkte-Updates Juli und August 2026” blog post (klara.ch, 27 August 2026), and marks a strategic shift for the vendor: KLARA is leaving its closed application model behind and opening up to the third-party ecosystem.
Background: KLARA as a Functional Silo
KLARA targets the integrated business management segment for small and medium-sized Swiss enterprises, covering invoicing, basic accounting, point of sale, payments and payroll. Its distinctive asset lies in its connection to ePost Service AG, Swiss Post’s digital subsidiary, which provides broad distribution reach — particularly in the German-speaking market.
Until 27 August, KLARA operated as a relatively closed system: invoicing data, customer records and payroll variables lived inside the application with no standardised bridge to the outside world. For businesses running a Shopify or WooCommerce webshop alongside KLARA for accounting, this meant double data entry: online orders did not automatically create invoices in KLARA, and customer records stayed out of sync.
That is exactly the problem the REST API is designed to solve.
What the API Actually Enables
According to the official blog post (klara.ch), the API covers three main use cases:
Invoice automation. Orders placed on a webshop can now trigger automatic invoice creation in KLARA without manual intervention. For a mid-volume online store, this typically eliminates several hours of weekly data entry.
Customer and product data sync. Customer records and product catalogues can be kept consistent between KLARA and a third-party CRM or e-commerce platform, eliminating the risk of mismatched addresses or prices across systems.
Payroll variable transmission. The API also enables sending compensation variables — overtime, allowances, bonuses — from third-party business applications to KLARA’s HR module, reducing re-entry at the end of each pay period.
The same product update also introduces two features in the KLARA payment terminal: a Self-Service mode allowing customers to compose their order and pay directly, and Pay-by-Link, which generates a payment link or QR code without requiring a physical terminal or a paper invoice.
Impact for Swiss SME CFOs and IT Leaders
For a Swiss SME combining online sales with accounting management, the opening of the KLARA API directly reduces the cost of duplicate data entry. In organisations without a dedicated IT team, it is often the business owner or bookkeeper who absorbs this manual rework: a few hours per week, multiplied by 52, adds up to a meaningful overhead.
The strategic stakes are different: KLARA is now entering the ecosystem logic that general ERP vendors have practised for years. Bexio, its direct competitor in the Swiss SME segment, has long offered integration capabilities through third-party connectors — native integrations with tools such as Shopify, WooCommerce and Stripe. KLARA’s public API now lets it compete in that category and attract developers or system integrators who want to build custom automations.
That said, the maturity of this v1 API still needs to be assessed: the scope of available endpoints, documentation quality and version stability all matter. An announced API is not a production-ready API, and prospective integrators will need to test on real-world scenarios before committing development resources.
What to Watch in the Coming Months
Two points deserve attention over the next few months.
First, the official connector catalogue. A public API only delivers operational value if it is well-documented, stable, and if integrators actually build on top of it. KLARA will likely need to publish native connectors for the most widely used e-commerce platforms in Switzerland, or rely on partners to deploy them.
Second, the competitive response. The Pay-by-Link launch and the API arrive in a context where payment and integration solutions are multiplying for Swiss SMEs. Bexio accelerated on accounting AI in June 2026 (Fiduza, Saley), and Abacus is betting on DeepAnalyze for finance. KLARA is opening a new front on application integration — the question is whether the Swiss developer community picks it up.
