Sage delivered Release 3 2026 of Sage Intacct on 7 August and published the full feature breakdown on 25 August. At the heart of this update: AI-powered anomaly detection for Accounts Payable Automation, now generally available, and Smart Reporting for Excel entering early adopter for UK customers (CPA Practice Advisor, 25 August 2026).
Context: Supplier fraud, the P2P cycle’s blind spot
Supplier payment fraud remains one of the most underaddressed risks in mid-market businesses. The typical attack is straightforward: a fraudster impersonates a legitimate supplier via email, submits an invoice with a substituted bank account, and the payment clears before the AP team spots the anomaly. This pattern — commonly known as Business Email Compromise (BEC) — requires no technical breach of the ERP and no access to encrypted data. It exploits the operational routine of finance teams.
Against this backdrop, embedding AI controls directly into the AP workflow is an architecturally sound response: the right place to intercept fraud is before a payment is approved, not after.
Sage cites its own research to frame the investment: 52% of SMBs rank cybersecurity and data protection as their top priority for the next 12 months, while 81% remain unprepared or only at the initial stage when it comes to AI-related risks (ibid.). The gap between intent and operational maturity is precisely the market Sage is targeting.
What changes for finance teams
Anomaly Detection for AP Automation. The system analyses incoming invoices and flags those originating from unrecognised supplier email addresses. Administrators can block suspicious senders before a payment is processed. Jon Fasoli, SVP of Sage Intacct, frames the positioning clearly: “AI should do more than automate routine tasks… It should help finance leaders catch problems earlier” (ibid.). The feature is generally available (GA) to all AP Automation customers globally.
For a CFO at a mid-sized UK business, the practical value is twofold: reduced BEC fraud risk and, potentially, a lever in cyber insurance negotiations if the auditor can document a preventive AI control embedded in the P2P cycle.
Smart Reporting for Excel. Finance teams can now work directly with Sage Intacct reporting structures inside Excel while preserving the access controls defined in the ERP. No more permission workarounds via CSV exports, no divergence between what comes out of the system and the manually reworked Excel model. This feature is in early adopter in the UK.
For finance teams that have built their workflows around Excel — still the norm across the vast majority of mid-market organisations — this significantly reduces friction between the ERP and monthly reporting. The efficiency gain may look modest on paper; in practice, during a month-end close under pressure, it is substantial.
Industry-specific improvements. R3 also brings updates for construction (automated retainage calculations, greater flexibility in contract billing, in early adopter for UK/US/Australia/Canada), lending (full credit lifecycle management, currently US-only), and hospitality (Craftable integration for purchasing, sales, and inventory synchronisation).
What to watch
False positive rates on anomaly detection. An AI tool that blocks too many legitimate invoices creates more friction than it resolves. The real test will come in the first months of production: how does the model handle a supplier that changes email domains after an internal migration, or a subcontractor that invoices from a generic address?
The GA rollout of Smart Reporting. The feature is currently in early adopter in the UK. No general availability date has been announced. For UK finance teams currently evaluating Sage Intacct, this is a point to clarify with your account manager before signing.
Geographic catch-up for industry modules. Lending Management is currently US-only. No timeline has been announced for the UK or Europe.
