Context: Sage’s strategy with accounting practices
Sage Génération Experts is one of the dominant practice management platforms in the French market, distributed to chartered accountants and their teams. Sage’s strategy rests on an indirect model: practices are clients, but also the distribution channel into their own SME client base.
That positioning was stated explicitly at the congress. Derk Bleeker, Chief Commercial Officer at Sage, put it plainly: “We will not compete with our accountants, because we see them as central” (ibid.). In France, 75% of businesses work with a chartered accountant — a ratio that mirrors the broader European trend of SMEs relying on their accountant as a primary business adviser, beyond pure compliance work.

On data sovereignty, Sage clarified at the congress that European client data is hosted in Europe and that the architecture is not tied to a single language model provider — a recurring concern as accounting practices evaluate AI tools against professional secrecy obligations.
What to watch
Two points merit attention over the coming months. First, the actual rollout of the Allia integration to practices: a congress announcement is not a deployment. Timing and pricing will determine real-world adoption.
